Skyfall, Brighton

Along with Brighton Girl I was invited along to to the new Skyfall. Located on church road the glass fronted restaurant has recently had a change of management which has meant new menu, new staff and even new furniture. Now specialising in burgers with alternative options available I was excited to head down last week.

The Menu and Atmosphere

I absolutely loved the decoration of the restaurant; with a mixture of industrial touches and comfy corner chairs the atmosphere is chic whilst still be inviting. The exposed brick wall and scaffolding lighting added a modern feel to the restaurant whilst the music playing quietly in the background was a nice touch. The service was excellent with attentive staff and an open bar where you could watch the staff make the drinks.

The Food

To start I went with calamari and Fanny went for the vegetable tempura.

The calamari was beautifully cooked with a crispy exterior; with a thinner batter than I had previously had but it balanced the squid perfectly. Served with a sweet chilli sauce which was the perfect balance of sweetness and heat from the diced chilli’s. It was lucky that I was so hungry as the portions are large!

Fanny went for the vegetable tempura. With no description of which vegetables they were it was a slight guessing game but game with corn, broccoli and courgette. With a light batter and fresh vegetables it was delicious, the highlight was the lemon mayonnaise that the tempura was served with, with citrus running through it matched nicely with the tempura batter.

For main I went with the mushroom and goats cheese burger and Fanny opted for the vegetarian burger; we also ordered the salad on the side.
Again, huge portions but both burgers were cooked well and I always love the presentation of the chips in a metal cup (keeps the fries crispy without being covered with the other items on the plate), it also came with a small side salad which wasn’t stated on the menu so we probably could have got away without ordering the additional salad.

My burger was stacked high with gorgeous ingredients; the mushroom was cooked well without making the bun soggy and the melting goats cheese accentuated the flavour of the mushroom. I absolutely loved the sweet onion marmalade served with the burger and the pesto added an extra herb flavour that made the meal. I didn’t manage to finish the burger but it wasn’t through lack of trying it just became a little rich at the end with the amount of goats cheese! The chips were perfectly crisp and fluffy inside, with a large portion they were perfect.

I am always a little sceptical about vegetarian burgers but Fanny's lentil and butternut squash burger was delicious. With the sweetness of the butternut squash coming through combined with the coriander creme fraiche it was balanced and tasty! Fanny went for the sweet potatoes fries which were crisp on the the outside but maintained the cloudy sweet interior that you hope for in a sweet potato fry. Fanny even said “the best sweet potato fry” she has had so you can’t knock that!

The side salad we had came with a honey and mustard dressing which perfectly complemented the salad. With a mixture of bitter and sweet leaves served with stings and ribbons of cucumber it was a perfect side to the rich burgers. I would definitely advise sharing this, rather than having one each, as although it was delicious I was a large portion size.

For desert we opted to share a sorbet of two flavours; limoncello and elderflower and passionfruit. They were a perfect complement of flavours.
The limoncello was a little bitter with the fresh taste of elderflower it worked really nicely. Paired with the almost creamy taste of the passoinfruit it was a perfect end to a rich meal.

The Allergies

There was a slight lack of detail for allergies, for example the lack of specification for the vegetable tempura however when asked about allergies they were very attentive. Swapping out the bun that the burgers were served in to accommodate for Fanny's nut and seed allergy and making sure to check on us regularly. There were good options for vegetarians also which is always really great to see!

I would definitely head back to skyfall; perhaps for one of their regular themed nights such as in-restuarant quizes and open mix nights. With the summer fast approaching and the windowed front its a perfect summer spot in hove for a few cocktails or a high stacked burger.
